The Oscar-nominated and Grammy-winning Nigerian sensation Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, achieved a remarkable double victory, receiving two prestigious awards on opposite sides of the Atlantic.
In London, at the ELLE Style Awards, the “Essence” crooner was honoured with the esteemed Trailblazer Award, an accolade that recognizes her exceptional contributions to the world of music.
The award was presented by BAFTA-winning actress Naomi Ackie and BBC Radio 1 presenter Julie Adenuga.

She also won songwriter of the year
In her heartfelt acceptance speech, Tems attributed her career success to her upbringing in Lagos, Nigeria, and her unwavering faith.
Meanwhile, across the ocean in Miami Beach, Florida, at the 2023 BMI R&B/Hip-Hop Awards, Tems was named the Songwriter of the Year.
Her songwriting credits include hits like “Free Mind,” Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up,” and Future and Drake’s “Wait For U.”

The star-studded BMI Awards ceremony, held at Miami’s LIV nightclub, celebrated the achievements of songwriters, producers, and music publishers.
It showcased the 36 most-performed R&B and hip-hop tracks of the past year from BMI’s extensive repertoire of over 20.6 million musical works in the United States.
Tems wasn’t the only artist to shine at the event, as Doja Cat also secured the Songwriter of the Year award for her contributions to hits like “Get Into It (Yuh),” “Woman,” and “Vegas.”
Additionally, Sony Music Publishing was honored as the Publisher of the Year, Ice Spice received the Impact Award for her influential artistry, and Chris Brown was named Songwriter of the Year for his work on tracks such as “Baddest,” “Come Through,” and “Under the Influence.”

Meanwhile, Temilade Openiyi, Grammy-winning Nigerian afro-pop singer and international sensation, has lost out on the prestigious Oscars awards 2023 the at the ongoing 95th edition of the Academy Awards.
She was nominated for her contribution as a songwriter on ‘Lift Me Up,’ one of the songs on Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’.
However, she lost the Oscar for Best Original Song to ‘Naatu Naatu’ from ‘RRR’, composed by MM Keeravani, with lyrics by Chandrabose and vocals by Rahul Sipligunj and Kaala Bhairava.
