A Nigerian man who simply identified himself as Ryan Oni Foto (@RyanOniFoto) on Twitter has narrated how he was rejected by a Lagos landlord simply because he was unmarried.
The man described how the stigma of being single has been taken to the house rent sector.
He stated that he was unable to proceed with the house rent because the landlord insisted that the house is only for married couples.
Ryan One Foot wrote: “So because I am not married, I cannot get this nice apartment I want. They want only married people. So as I am unmarried, I am irresponsible abi? Sir, it is not your fault sha.”
Later, Ryan said that he will not be considering any suggestions, insisting that he is moving on:
“I appreciate the concern from you all. I see all the comments suggesting that I tell them I am engaged or get someone to act like my wife. That’s totally out of it for me. I definitely cannot compromise. I will find a good house soon. And you will hear all about it.”
Some reactions to Ryan’s story
Bash (@DarwinsChaplain) said:
“While looking for a house in Lagos some years ago, the landlord required me to call my wife on speaker phone to confirm I was married. At that point I declined his request and decided to let the house go. Nobody go tension me with my own money.

“My dear, saw an apartment I really liked and I could afford. Oga said no way I could afford it without a man unless I was a prostitute.”
