Jafaru Zakany works as a security guard in a company in 2022 before he was arrested over a generator that went missing in June, 2022.
Zakany could not give account how the generator under his care went missing, he was arrested just so he could confess.
“Jafaru was arrested and taken to Area F police station, he spent about two weeks in the police cell before he was charged and arraigned in court.
“In July 2022, he was taken to court and was charged with the offense of Stealing and Conspiracy. He was then remanded at the Medium Correctional Center,” Headfort Foundation, a prison reform organization had narrated.
It was in one of the organization’s court visit that Zakany met Thecla Onuagu, a lawyer from the Headfort Foundation.
“On one of our court cell visits in December 2022, Jafaru met with one of our Lawyers, Thecla Onuagu, she took his brief and represented him. After so many discussions with the Complainant to withdraw the charge against Jafaru as they (the company) had no proof or evidence alleging that Jafaru stole the generator, the Complainant agreed and decided to withdraw the charge against Jarafu,” Headfort Foundation said.
The Headfort Foundation lawyer forwarded an application to the court on Zakany’s case on January 17, 2023.
In the application, Onuagu argued that there is no evidence that Zakany committed the crime.
“Thecla applied to the court to strike out the case as the Complainant has no evidence to ascertain that the defendant (Jafaru) committed the offense. Her application was granted and Jafaru was discharged accordingly.”
Prior to his release, Zakany had spent six months “in custody as punishment for a crime he knew nothing about.”
