Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has found himself at the center of controversy due to his extended absence from the state and the decision to govern from Ibadan, Oyo State, instead of Akure, the state’s capital.
The reasons behind his distant leadership have raised concerns and have been a topic of public discussion.
His health challenges and accommodation issues
Governor Akeredolu’s absence was primarily attributed to his health issues. He had been on a medical vacation in Germany for a long time.
Upon his return, it became apparent that he was unable to stay in the two-bedroom Presidential Lodge in Akure, which had been his official residence. He needs an improved living space for his recovery and overall well-being.
Governance from Ibadan
In light of these accommodation challenges, Governor Akeredolu chose to govern Ondo State from Ibadan, Oyo State, where he could access better housing and healthcare facilities. The PDP’s youth wing issued an ultimatum for the governor’s return.
The question here is whether a governor can effectively lead a state from a location other than the designated state capital. Nigerian law, as specified in Section 190(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, permits a governor to transmit a written declaration of his absence from the state to the state House of Assembly and transmit a written declaration of his return when he is back in the state. Akeredolu has followed this constitutional process by informing the State House of Assembly about his medical leave and resumption.
Things are going well
Doyin Odebowale, the Special Adviser on Special Duty and Strategy to Governor Akeredolu, came to the governor’s defense, emphasizing the importance of his health.
He highlighted that governance was continuing smoothly despite the governor’s physical absence, with laws being signed, civil servants being paid, and development projects ongoing.
Also, Akeredolu’s Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Richard Olatunde, debunked rumors of another impending medical leave.
He insisted that the governor was committed to addressing the state’s genuine concerns and prioritizing development.
He cited various ongoing projects and assured that the administration remained dedicated to serving the people of Ondo State.
