Nigerian music sensation Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, made history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) by winning the inaugural “Best Afrobeats Song” category. 

Rema won this award for his collaboration with American pop star Selena Gomez on the hit track “Calm Down.” 

The VMAs ceremony took place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, USA.

Rema made history

Rema’s “Calm Down” won over big competition, including tracks like Wizkid’s “2 Sugar,” Burna Boy’s “It’s Plenty,” Davido’s “Unavailable,” Ayra Starr’s “Rush,” Fireboy and Asake’s “Bandana,” and Cameroonian singer Libianca’s “People.”

During the event, Rema was joined on stage by Selena Gomez to accept the award for their outstanding musical collaboration.

He appreciated legends in Afrobeats 

In his acceptance speech, the 21-year-old singer expressed gratitude to his fans, his team, and Selena Gomez. 

He also dedicated the award to the legends of the Afrobeats genre, acknowledging the contributions of iconic figures like Fela Kuti, 2Baba, Don Jazzy, D’Banj, D’Prince, Runtown, Timaya, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and Davido in paving the way for the new generation of Afrobeats artists.

2023 Headies: Netizens praise Rema over award speech

Meanwhile, popular Nigerian singer and award-winning musician, Divine Ikubor well known as Rema has left many netizens gushing following his speech in the Headies Award show.

It was reported by Ikejabird that the Afrobeat singer and songwriter won several awards in Headies some of which were “Best Male Artist” and “African Artist” of the Year.

Following this, after getting his award, the singer was given the spotlight and stage for his speech, he started by appreciating the producers, directors, and his fans for making him achieve this milestone.
