Qatar 2022: Saudi upset Argentina as France outclass Australia

There was high drama at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar as exciting results were recorded in Group C and D fixtures

Argentina vs Saudi Arabia

One of the tournament’s favourites Argentina were stunned by the Middle East nation in their opening fixture.

Lionel Messi opened his account from a spot-kick but the Argentines were denied two goals from offside calls by the VAR.

The Arab nation turned the game on its head as Saleh Alshehri equalized four minutes after the break to make it 1-1.

Saudi were not done yet as captain Dawsari curled in a beautiful shot into the goalkeeper’s left-hand corner to match it 2-1 and it proved to be the match-winner.

Poland vs Mexico

The two other teams in the group shared the spoils after both sides failed to find the back of the net.

The talking point of the game was Robert Lewandowski missing a penalty which was brilliantly saved by legendary goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.

Tunisia vs Denmark

One of Africa’s representatives Tunisia gave a good account of themselves against the Danes.

The North African side were denied a goal after Issam Jebali was spotted in an offside position in the build up to the goal.

Cornelius’ scrambled goal was also cancelled in the second half as Damsgaard was caught offside. It ended 0-0 as both teams shared the points.

France vs Australia

The defending champions were put to test in Group D as Australia opened the scoring as early as the ninth minute.

Craig Goodwin was on hand to finish Mathew Lecki’s cross to hand the Socceroos the lead.

However, the lead did not last long as Andrien Rabiot headed home a cross from Theo Hernandez to make.it 1-1.

Les Bleues then punished the Aussies for slack defending as Rabiot put Olivier Giroud through to have an easy tap-in and make it 2-1.

France showed class in the second period as PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe made 3-1 from a superb header.

The onslaught was complete as Giroud produced a trademark header to end the game in favour of his team by 4-1.
