Protest rocks Ondo varsity over death of ex-student in road crash – Management postpones exams

Students at Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba-Akoko,Ondo State trooped out in their large numbers early today to protest incessant road accidents near the institution.

The accidents are mostly caused by articulated vehicles (heavy-duty trucks) plying the university road.

The death, yesterday, of a former student at the institution simply identified as Micheal led to the protest.

IkejaBird learnt that the hit-and-run truck driver who killed the youngman was trailed to neighbouring town Oba-Akoko, where he was arrested around 10pm yesterday.

Nevertheless, the students took to the streets protest the death of their former colleague.

It was gathered that many of the protesters(students) converged on the school entrance by 7am this morning.

They chanted freedom songs and held placards with different inscriptions.

Also, vehicular movements in the town were said to have been restricted.

Meanwhile, the university management has postponed the ongoing examinations to avoid escalation of the protest.In a statement, university authorities said:

“The Management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, has expressed serious concern over the incessant rate of accidents claiming the lives of students of the University.

“In view of the accident that claimed the life of a former student late evening of yesterday, Thursday, 3rd February, 2022, Management has decided to postpone today’s examinations. This is to honour the departed soul. A new date for the examinations will be announced later.

“The Management is currently engaging all relevant stakeholders on what should be done to address the ugly trend, and put and end to vehicular accidents in the University town.”
