Primary Health Care Centers – Lifesavers Within Communities

Primary healthcare centers were set up to bring healthcare closer to people in communities. In Ikeja, they are strategically located within populated areas and serve as the first point of contact for individuals seeking medical care. They offer a wide range of essential medical services to address the diverse healthcare needs of the community.

These centers serve as beacons of hope regardless of socio-economic status of the citizens. IkejaBird visited several Primary Heath care centers in Ikeja and here is an overview.

Primary Health Care Centers operate Monday through Friday from 8am to 4pm. They offer free consultations and registration to all who walk in, ensuring no one is turned away when seeking medical assistance. With major focus on preventive care and community outreach, immunization services for children, antenatal care and family planning, general medical consultations (for malaria, typhoid, cough etc.), basic laboratory tests and minor surgical procedures.

PHC’s in Ikeja are staffed by a team of skilled healthcare professionals, including doctors (who are present twice or thrice in a week), nurses (minimum of at least 6 on duty), midwives, pharmacists, laboratory technicians, and other support staff who work together to deliver quality care and ensure that patients in a timely and efficient manner.

There are very little queues and patients are quickly attended to. A lot of people are still not aware of the services being rendered at the centers at little or no cost.

Despite their essential role, some PHC centers in Ikeja face challenges like limited resources and staffing constraints. However, they continue to serve the community and improve health outcomes for all.

It is hoped that many more residents will utilize their PHC’s more for minor ailments. This will help them access cheaper and convenient care, instead of waiting in long lines at the general hospital.
