Following the alleged kidnapping of an undetermined number of road users, including students from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, who were returning to class after the eight-month Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, strike, there was a tense calm on Sunday in Ugwuogo Nike-Nsukka Express Road, Enugu East Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Some lucky commuters who escaped said, the kidnappers attacked at least six commercial buses, riddled them with bullets, and diverted the passengers to nearby bushes.
According to unverified reports, the kidnappers are already contacting victims’ families and demanding N30 million in ransom.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday by its spokesman, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command stated that it has deployed security assets to the location with the goal of rescuing the victims and apprehending the perpetrators.
The statement read, “alleged abduction: Enugu CP orders adequate security along Ugwuogo-Nike/Opi/Nsukka road, rescue of alleged abducted victims, and arrest of culprits.”
Ndukwe stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Ammani, ordered the maximum deployment of the command’s operational and intelligence resources “to ensure adequate security on the said road, rescue an undetermined number of persons allegedly abducted, and arrest the hoodlums” after receiving a report of the alleged attack and abduction of some travellers at the Agu-Ekwegbe community axis of the Ugwuogo-Nike/Opi/Nsukka highway in the
