OREGUN, LAGOS — From a day of quiet preparation to a magnificent public celebration, Oba Dr. Olukunmi Olusesan Akingbola, the Ikoduro 1 of Oregun land, commemorated five impactful years on the ancestral throne. The anniversary celebration, held on August 30th at the spacious Oregun High School field, was a showcase of rich Yoruba culture and a testament to the community’s high regard for their monarch.
The celebration was attended by scores of prominent figures, including traditional rulers from across Lagos and beyond. Notable kings in attendance included the Oba of Ikotun, the Oba of Onigbongbo Kingdom, the Oba of Akesan Kingdom, among others. The event was filled with vibrant singing, energetic dancing, and motivational speeches, all highlighting the importance of community and tradition.
A King Loved by His People
The sentiment from palace officials, residents, and indigenes of Oregun was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for Oba Olusesan’s leadership.
“Kabiyesi is a good man,” said Ademola, the palace secretary. “We are all happy under his reign. He represents us well and carries us with care and love.”
Bidemi, the Oba’s Personal Assistant, echoed this sentiment. “I have never regretted a single day of working for the King of Oregun land. He is a great man with a kind heart.”
A resident and student of Oregun High School, Yemisi, highlighted the king’s dedication to education. “Kabiyesi is a ruler who understands the value of education. His constant support has given us an edge over most students in neighbouring communities. We couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Five Years of Joy and Fulfillment
When asked about his five-year journey, Oba Olusesan responded with a voice full of fulfilment and accomplishment.
“It has been five years of joy and fulfilment sitting on this very throne of my ancestors,” he said. “I thank God for the opportunity to lead and serve my people.”
The Oba noted that his primary challenge has been dealing with those who complain despite his efforts to move Oregun forward. He stated that he chooses to channel his energy toward those with positive minds.
Looking ahead, the King stated that his focus remains on education and vocational skills. “I am big on education,” he declared. “I will continue to ensure that every child in our community gets a quality education, and those not interested in formal schooling acquire vocational skills.”
This celebration not only marked a significant milestone but also reaffirmed the strong bond between Oba Olusesan Akingbola and his people.
