On December 30, 2023, a devastating act of lawlessness unfolded in Computer Village, Ikeja, as Powa Plaza Phases 1 and 2 were illegally demolished under orders from the Inspector General of Police. Armed with tear gas and weapons, over 300 police officers stormed the area, disregarding a Lagos State High Court injunction that prohibited the demolition.
This unlawful act displaced more than 300 thriving ICT businesses, cutting off livelihoods for over 5,000 dependents. Tenants with valid leases were neither notified nor compensated, and goods and equipment valued at over ₦1 billion were allegedly looted before the buildings were demolished overnight.
These businesses had been the backbone of Computer Village, specializing in IT solutions, employing thousands, and paying federal and state taxes. Their destruction represents not just a blow to the economy but a deliberate attack on law-abiding citizens and SMEs who built their enterprises over 20 years.
In a statement released by The President of Computer Dealers Association of Ikeja and Chairman Info City Dealers Association they describe this event as a blatant abuse of power and a flagrant disregard for the rule of law. Despite numerous appeals and attempts at communication, the affected parties claim they have faced intimidation and deceit from the authorities responsible.
One year later, the victims remain resolute in their call for justice. They demand fair compensation for their losses, accountability for those who orchestrated the demolition, and a restoration of dignity to those whose livelihoods have been destroyed.
The associations also mourn members who succumbed to the shock and trauma of the incident and highlight the ongoing struggles of survivors who now live in hardship. They are appealing to human rights organizations, Nigerians at home and abroad, and the international community to amplify their demands for justice and fairness.
As the new year approaches, the affected businesses and their associations hope for peace and a chance to rebuild what was taken from them.
