The Lagos state government has said that the old 1000, 500 and 200 naira notes remain legal tender in line with the pronouncement of the Supreme Court.
Ikeja Bird recalls that on March 3, the supreme court ruled that the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes remain legal tender until December 31, 2023.
The apex court also threw a subtle jibe at President Muhammadu Buhari over his February national broadcast, where he pronounced the old notes as illegal tender except the 200.
Amid silence of the presidency and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over the supreme court judgement, Lagos said it is adjusting to the apex court’s directive.
In the same vein, the governor of Anambra state and former CBN governor, Charles Soludo, has directed banks in his state to dispense and collect the old notes.
In a statement issued on Sunday, March 12, the governor said CBN governor Godwin Emefiele confirmed to him that the old naira notes could be used as legal tender.
Meanwhile, some governors in the country’s northern region have vowed to drag Emefiele and the minister of justice and federal attorney general, Abubakar Malami to court for contempt of the law.
The governors issued the warning over the affected parties’ defeating silence to the supreme court’s verdict.
Some of the governors included Yahaya Bello of Kogi state and Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna state.
