The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE)  have decided to embark on their own strike over the fuel subsidy.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his inauguration speech at Abuja promised that they would no longer be a petrol subsidy because there was no budgetary plan for it in 2023 and that he would instead use the fund for healthcare, infrastructural projects, and education.

However, his decision generated the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) instructing all its outlet members to sell Petrol for almost thrice its price, N570 or N480.

Withdraw services and commence protest starting from Wednesday” – NUEE, NUJ

The NUEE announced that the decision for going on a protest was brought about by the sudden inflation of fuel prices and instructed that they would commence their withdrawal of services on Wednesday, June 2023.

The National Union of Journalism, on the other hand, explained in a press statement by Shuaibu Usman Leman, the National Secretary of the NUJ that their decision to follow the NLC was because the strike was for the betterment of Nigerian.

The statement was “CWC reiterates the argument that although the removal of fuel subsidy will free allocations which can be channeled to the provisions of infrastructure and creation of additional jobs, the sudden removal could, however, lead to social unrests and protests as people may perceive Government as being insensitive to their plight”

“Accordingly CWC directs all state councils of the Union to mobilize members to withdraw their services and commence protests nationwide from Wednesday next week, 7th June 2023, if the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limiter (NNCPL) refuses to reverse the new price regime in the Oil sector.”
