Nigerian secondary school students from Queen of the Rosary College Onitsha, in Anambra State, have clinched second place in the just concluded World Affairs Challenge competition.

The World Affairs Challenge (WAC) is an international program and competition for middle and high school students which encourages them to be creative.

They are challenged to develop and implement their own SMART solutions for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The team from Queen of the Rosary College Onitsha innovated Queens’ Lyfe bags – a 100% plantable biodegradable material.

These bags were made from rice straws, banana fibers, corn husks and infused with tomato, pepper and watermelon seeds so that the bags can grow into plants when disposed of.

This jaw dropping innovation earned them second place in the very competitive global challenge. 

A team from the USA won first place and a bilateral team of students from US and Iraq won third place.

The students led by their teacher mentor, Mr John aOnuigbo, competed with over 760 participants during the various preliminary rounds.

These rounds narrowed them down to 28 teams in the Global Championship, where the girls were named the Global second-place winning team in the high school division. 

The school principal, Rev Sr Maria Chijioke Nwankwo, expressed her joy and gratitude to God for the win saying “We have been putting in the work to provide our students with world-class tech education.”

She stated that the high quality of education given to their students has become evident in their winning a global award.

Meanwhile, Fatima Adamu Maikusa, a 15-year-old female genius and native of Gombe State, Nigeria has set an international record by winning seven medals in different mathematics competitions across the world.

In an interview with Daily Trust, The senior secondary school student (SS3 Class) at Nigerian Tulip International School (NTIC), Kano, shared her inspiring story.

Fatima is now an inspiration and role model to many of the young girls in her school and in Africa.
