The federal government has extended the deadline for the swap and deposit of the old naira notes by 60 days.
President Muhammadu Buhari gave this order extending the naira swap on Thursday, February 16, during an early morning national broadcast monitored by Ikeja Bird.
However, old 500 and 1000 naira notes are no longer accepted as legal tender, according to the president.
Since the redesign of the naira, Nigeria’s legal tender, by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the economy has been hugely affected, resulting in hardship and anger across the country.
Yesterday, protests were recorded in some states, including Delta, Oyo and Edo, as frustrated Nigerians took to the streets to destroy banks and vandalise the properties of some financial institutions.
At least four people were reportedly killed as security operatives shot to quench the protest.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Nigeria will hold its sitting next week, Wednesday, February 22, to give verdict on the suits brought before it by some states.
