Isabel Kaplan, a writer who recently published her debut novel titled Not Safe For Work, has revealed how her boyfriend parted ways with her.
She said her boyfriend who is also a published writer himself broke up with her because she became a writer like him.
“Five weeks to the day after my debut novel was published, my boyfriend, who is a writer, broke up with me because I am a writer,” Isabel told Guardian UK.
Isabel also revealed that this was not their first break up. She said that her boyfriend broke up with her in 2016 because she was a failure.
Her boyfriend’s only reason at the time was that she was not enough for him. He noted that he was looking for a supporting partner and not a wife, Isabel said.
After their first break up, they were apart for two years. Isabel said she dated two guys before they came back together again.
By the time they got back together, Isabel had a good paying job. She was also working on her novel manuscript.
Her boyfriend began to complain after they got back together that he was not comfortable with the fact that she was a writer.
“I promised never to publish anything that he was uncomfortable with. I reminded him that I had never written about him because I knew he didn’t want me to – even during the years we weren’t together,” Isabel said.
Despite the constant reassurances, Isabel said her husband was not having it. He finally parted ways with her five weeks after she published her first novel.
Even though they were not legally married, Isabel said she had a child with her boyfriend. Also, they had always shared the same apartment while they were together.
She said she is now writing about her boyfriend not as a revenge but to heal from the pain of losing him.
