It is fitting to say that Morocco has been the best African team in the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
They have come a long way, breaking the old jinx and setting newer records on the go. The African continent found another moment of pride in the Atlas Lions.
Achraf Hakimi’s side were tough in the defense, creative and solid in the midfield; they also scored some of the best goals in the tournament.
Until they faced France in the semi final, they were the only team that did not concede a goal. The last time that happened was in 1976, about 4 decades ago.
The hunger for success that they have demonstrated in this competition may serve as a stepping stone to greater heights in subsequent ones.
Their African colleagues have seen that it is possible to go this far and it will now boost their confidence and drive them to unimaginable limits.
Kylian Mbappe exchanged clothes with his friend Achraf Hakimi at the end of the semi final match and told him that it was important for the Moroccan defender to look on the brighter side of things.
To paraphrase him, he said: You made history my friend and everyone is proud of you.
It is true. The world is proud of these African lions that played with grit and fearlessness; the untamed and magnificent giants with only fires in their boots.
They came, they saw and they made history. Sadly, they are not going home with silverware after their loss against Croatia on Saturday. But they would be going home with one important thing: a historic memory that would forever be remembered.
