Lionel Messi’s shirts from the 2022 World Cup are being sold at an auction today. The auction is happening in New York at Sotheby’s.
They are selling a set of six of Messi’s shirts all together. These include the shirt he wore in the final when Argentina won the World Cup.
The shirts are expected to sell for more than £8 million. This would be a new world record amount paid for a piece of sports memorabilia. The current record was set last year. In September 2022, a Michael Jordan basketball jersey sold for £8.1 million.

Messi has sold his shirts before at auctions. In 2017, he sold the shirt he wore when Barcelona played Real Madrid.
He scored a last minute winning goal in that game. That shirt sold for £360,000. This new auction will sell his shirts for much more than that.
The record for the most paid for a football shirt is held by Diego Maradona. Last year his shirt from the 1986 World Cup sold to an anonymous buyer for £7.1 million. That was the famous “Hand of God” match against England.
Former England player Steve Hodge got Maradona’s shirt after that match. He sold it last year. Columnist Chris Sutton says he would never give away a Maradona shirt. Sutton said Maradona is like a football God.
Fans are excited to try to buy Messi’s World Cup shirts. They want something he wore during such an iconic moment in sports.
