Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka might play for the Democratic Republic of Congo in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Congo wants Wan-Bissaka on their national team for the tournament.
Wan-Bissaka has played for England’s youth teams but never for the senior national team. He was going to play for England’s senior team in 2019 but got injured and pulled out. Since Wan-Bissaka has not played for England’s senior national team, he can still decide to play for Congo, where his parents are from.
If Wan-Bissaka plays for Congo, he will be away from Manchester United for over a month during the Africa Cup tournament next January and February. Manchester United’s goalkeeper Andre Onana will likely play for Cameroon in the tournament. So Manchester United might be without Wan-Bissaka and Onana for an important part of the season.

Other Manchester United players like Amad Diallo, Hannibal Mejbri, and Sofyan Amrabat could also play in the Africa Cup if their national teams pick them up. Their absence would also hurt Manchester United.
This season is an important one for Wan-Bissaka and Manchester United. He has been injured but is now healthy again.
He will try to lock down a starting spot in Manchester United’s team. But his future at the club is uncertain since his contract ends soon.
The club could extend it by one more year but it’s not clear if they will offer him a new long-term contract. So this Africa Cup decision is a big one for both the player and the club.
