Suleiman Yakubu, an indigene of Plateau state, has been sentenced to two years in jail on Wednesday for stealing two broiler chickens on December 7.
Yakubu stole those chickens at Chioma Ebedu’s house and appeared in the upper area court on Wednesday for the judgment.
David Damulak, the judge who made the decision after the 18-year-old pleaded guilty for the crime said that stealing is a criminal offense in the Nigerian constitution.
However, the judge sentenced the Nigerian man to two years jail on two counts. He had an option of N25,000 fine or a year for stealing and N10,000 or 12 months for trespass.
The judge stated that the Jos indigene was given such judgment to serve as a lesson for others who would want to tow his path.
Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, the Prosecution counsel, said that the convict broke into the victims house in the afternoon with his friend. He also said that the friend is now at large.
He noted that both chickens had been recovered from him.
Earlier, Yakubu had attempted to escape during a photo session with the chicken he stole. The inspector narrated that he was asked to pose with the chicken and wait for the click of the camera but instead he tried to escape.
He did not make it far before he was caught.
It is unknown if he will spend those 24 months in jail or would consider the other fine which requires him to pay a certain amount of money.
Ikeja Bird gathered that Yakubu’s fine amounted to N35,000 altogether.
