Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has gracefully accepted an apology from Ghanaian politician Isaac Adongo, after Adongo used Maguire’s struggles last season as a metaphor to criticize a political rival.
In a speech last week, Adongo highlighted Maguire’s improved play recently and apologized for his harsh comments the year before.
In a speech in 2022, Adongo had coined the term “economic Maguire” to discredit vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic policies, comparing Bawumia’s perceived failures to Maguire’s struggles on the pitch for Manchester United last season.

The England international had fallen out of favor and seemed destined to leave Old Trafford. However, Maguire fought his way back into the first team this season with a series of resilient performances, prompting Adongo to highlight Maguire’s “transformation” and issue a public apology this time around, while taking fresh aim at Bawumia’s handling of Ghana’s economic woes.
Maguire’s Graceful Response
Responding via social media, Maguire accepted Adongo’s apology good-naturedly, saying “See you at Old Trafford soon.”
Maguire had previously borne the criticism stoically while battling to revive his United career. His composed reaction to Adongo’s latest comments drew praise for “taking the high road.”
With Ghana in negotiations over an economic relief package with the International Monetary Fund against the backdrop of protests over living costs, Adongo again invoked Maguire’s improved game to attack his political nemesis Bawumia’s policies. But Maguire met the fresh controversy with the resilience he has shown on the field this season.
