The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has shifted the deadline for employers to file their 2026 annual tax returns by one week now due by February 7, instead of February 1.

In a statement, LIRS Executive Chairman Dr. Ayodele Subair explained that although the statutory deadline is January 31 each year, the extension is meant to give employers extra time to complete and submit accurate returns without error.

Dr. Subair reiterated that electronic filing via the LIRS eTax portal is the only approved method, as manual submissions have been fully phased out. Employers are urged to ensure that every employee’s Tax Identification Number (TaxID) is correctly captured in the system before submission.

The move comes amid broader efforts by tax authorities to improve compliance while rolling out newer tax laws and stronger enforcement tools across the country.

For employers operating in Lagos, this extension is a small relief especially for those juggling the end-of-year rush but it’s also a reminder that tax compliance remains a serious business obligation.
