Lagos State intensifies sanitation efforts, closes Mile 12 market |Ikejabird.com

The Lagos State government, on Friday, closed Mile 12 International, and Owode Onirin markets over unhygienic and environmental conditions.

Enforcement officers from LAWMA and KAI conducted a joint operation to close the markets under the directives of Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner of Ministry of Environment and Water Resources.

The Commissioner, who stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness in all markets, recently stated the necessity for strict sanitation measures.

He said, “Recent events at Mile 12 and Owode Onirin markets have brought to light the pressing need for strict adherence to sanitation standards in our markets. The closure, though a difficult decision, is a necessary step to address the prevailing environmental challenges and to ensure the safety and well-being of all stakeholders.

“The closure of Mile 12 and Owode Onirin markets will enable the stakeholders to assess the situation, improve public health and environmental sanity around those axes. Conditions in the markets have deteriorated to a point where immediate intervention became inevitable.”

Traders and customers have been urged to focus on hygiene and sustainable practices.

Ikejabird recalls that the Lagos State government recently closed other popular markets like Oyingbo and Ladipo due to unhygienic premises.

Why Lagos govt shutdown famous Ladipo market

In other news, the Lagos State Government shut down Ladipo market, Mushin, one of the popular markets in Lagos.

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) sealed the gates of the market, restricting movement and sales.

This decision was ordered by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.
