The Lagos State Government Education District Six has honoured outstanding teachers and students at its 19th Annual Merit Awards, themed “Rewarding Excellence.”

The event, held on September 25, 2025, at Ikeja Senior Grammar School, Bolade Oshodi, was hosted by the Tutor-General and Permanent Secretary of the district, Mrs. Yusuf Mojisola Christianah.

The Honourable Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Jamiu Tolani Ali-Balogun, graced the occasion as Special Guest of Honour. In his remarks, he applauded the district for sustaining the tradition of recognising excellence, adding that such initiatives motivate both teachers and students to strive for higher performance.

Education District Six covers Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin, and Isolo Local Government Areas. Awards were presented across categories including:

  • Best Teacher, Senior Secondary School Division
  • Best Teacher, Junior Secondary School Division
  • Best Performing Student, Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE)
  • Best Performing Student, Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination (JSCE)

The ceremony opened with prayers led by a teacher from one of the schools in the district and featured colourful cultural performances, including a beautiful dance display by students, which drew loud applause from the audience.

Speaking with IkejaBird after receiving their awards, some of the honourees expressed joy and gratitude. One teacher said: “I am so delighted for this day. I thank God and the Lagos State Government who made it possible. I advise all teachers to keep working hard because hard work pays.”

A Vice Principal from Isolo Boys School, who also attended the ceremony, described the process as transparent and credible. “The awards were free, fair, unbiased and based on pure merit,” she said.

Another student awardee noted that the recognition was not just a personal win but “a motivation for others to believe in themselves and aim higher.”

According to the organisers, the awards serve as a vital platform to promote quality education and reward those who contribute significantly to the district’s success. They added that a great deal of effort went into ensuring the programme’s success.

The event, according to many attendees, was “a true example of giving honour to whom honour is due.”
