The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Labour Party (LP) under the leadership of Julius Abure has emphasized that Senator Athan Achonu remains the legitimate candidate for the upcoming Imo State governorship election scheduled for November 11.
The LP NWC dismissed claims that Abure had been removed from his position by the Imo State Court of Appeal, accusing the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) of infiltrating the situation.
The Court of Appeal in Imo State recently upheld the decision of a Federal High Court in Owerri, which dismissed Senator Achonu’s appeal due to its incompetence.

He should have gotten permission first
The court ruled that Achonu failed to seek and obtain permission from the court before filing the appeal, rendering it invalid.
Additionally, the appeal was declared statute-barred as it wasn’t filed within the required 14-day timeframe.
In response to the court ruling, the Abure-led NWC held a press briefing in Abuja, where they described the ruling as an attempt to mislead the public and undermine the progress of the LP’s efforts to position itself as a prominent political force in Nigeria.
Farouk has clarified everything
Umar Farouk, the National Secretary of the Abure-led NWC, asserted that Senator Achonu remains the LP’s governorship candidate in Imo State, citing the endorsement he has received from various stakeholders, including party leaders and members.
Farouk clarified that Chief Ukaegbu Ikechukwu Joseph is not the LP’s candidate and that no court has declared him as such.
He also emphasized that the LP’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, retains his position and that the LP stands united in support of Senator Achonu.
The LP NWC expressed confidence in Achonu’s candidacy and their expectation of success in the upcoming election.
Labour Party raises concerns over alleged negative tactics by ruling party
Meanwhile, the Labour Party (LP) has expressed concerns over what it calls a deliberate attempt by the ruling party to tarnish its image in a bid to create chaos and confusion, thereby justifying what the LP claims is the ruling party’s “stolen mandate.”
The LP’s statement, conveyed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, asserts that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been spreading misleading information.
They accused the APC of making baseless claims that its supporters were making threats towards the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) and its judges.
