Kate Henshaw, popular Nollywood actress, has called for the complete abolition of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program.
The NYSC program, initiated by the Nigerian government during the military era, was designed to foster unity and promote peaceful coexistence among citizens.
Kate Henshaw, however, believes that the NYSC program has lost its relevance and is now posing a risk to lives due to the prevailing insecurity.
She recently took to Twitter to share her personal experience during her service and called for the complete abolition of the program.
She wrote, “When I served in the North, it was a very memorable experience. Travelling from Bauchi by road to the airport was safe & then flying to Lagos just with my NYSC ID card, which also got me rebate on my ticket.
“It’s time to SCRAP this idea since corpers can’t travel within this country without LET OR HINDRANCE! Stop putting the lives of young people at risk with moribund ideas.Security is a priority & needs to be sorted totally, not technically.”
Reactions: NYSC is a waste of time
Many agreed with Henshaw, adding that the NYSC program be scrapped or reformed. Here are some comments:
@GbemiDennis: The purpose of national integration and unity which this scheme should be serving has been eroded due to several avoidable reasons. It has gradually turned to a space to fulfil academic and certification requirement without a sense of nation building.
@DiceOfTruth: Security needs to be non-negotiable. How many things are we going to cancel because the government can’t carry out their basic responsibilities. Can’t protect the border and stop petrol carrying tankers… cancel subsidy. Can’t arrest black market operators… cancel Naira.
@d_problemsolver: It’s over 8 years I have been clamoring for NYSC scrap. It’s a waste of time.
@simisola10: NYSC is a great idea which is now failing in it’s execution and operations. I made lifelong friends during camp and I would want others to benefit from the experience. The problem is the execution has failed. The vision of Yakubu Gowon in 1973 was to foster national unity and cohesion. Is it still serving this purpose? I don’t think so. It is time to either revamp, reform or discontinue.
@angelfallz2: Nonsense! Irrespective of where you are in Nigeria, the lives of young people are always at risk. Scrapping NYSC will not stop putting young people’s lives at risk As of today, we need NYSC more than ever You should instead call for the scrapping of the current security apparatus
