Roberto Martinez has been announced as the new coach of Portugal today, IkejaBird can report.
The former Belgium coach relinquished his role after his side crashed out of the World Cup at the group stage a few weeks ago.
Martinez was instrumental to Belgium’s success in the past 6 years that he was at the helm. As the coach, Belgium was No.1 on FIFA Team Ranking until 2022. They are now ranked third all over the world.
“I appreciate the enthusiasm and ambition with which he (Martinez) received the invitation. This is an important moment for the national team,” Fernando Gomes, the Portugal National Football President said at a news conference.
Martinez will replace Fernando Santos who voluntarily resigned as Portugal coach after he crashed out of the 2022 World Cup in the quarter final stage.
Martinez has been assigned the difficult job of rebuilding the team and making it formidable enough to compete and win titles.
