On September 23, 2023, in the city of Makurdi, the Benue State Governorship Elections concluded with a decision that dismissed the petition brought forward by Titus Uba from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). The court ruled that the current winner of the election is Governor Hyacinth Alia, who represents the All Progressive Congress (APC).
The court’s decision to reject Uba and the PDP’s petitions was based on the fact that it didn’t have the authority or power to address the issues raised by the petitioners in a legal setting. The court specifically mentioned that these issues were related to matters that should have been resolved before the actual election, known as “pre-election matters.”
Justice Ibrahim Karaye, who led a panel of three judges, emphasized that their role was not to handle these issues, as they fell outside the court’s jurisdiction.

Why tribunal dismiss PDP petition against Governor Alia in Benue State
According to the court, the PDP and the Uba should have taken their case beyond the federal high court that dismissed the suits they filed to the court of appeal rather than bringing it before the court of justice.
The PDP and Uba have had a quarrel that Alia was not qualified to be nominated by the APC and alleged that Alia deputy; Sam Ode had a forged certification and had presented fake information to the independent national commission.

Kano tribunal declares APC winner, removes Abba Kabir Yusuf from office
In another news, The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Kano State has overturned the declaration of Abba Kabir Yusuf, the state governor elected on the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) platform, and declared Nasir Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the March 18 election.
The tribunal, consisting of a three-man panel, ordered the withdrawal of the certificate of return previously presented to Governor Yusuf by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and directed that a certificate of return be issued to Gawuna.
One of the key factors leading to this decision was the discovery of a significant number of invalid ballot papers.
