Why men’s day is important: Making sense of November 19

Each year on November 19th, people around the world take time to recognize and celebrate men all over the world. 

International Men’s Day is an annual event celebrated on November 19th each year.

 It is a day to celebrate the positive value that men bring to the world, their families, and communities. 

The day aims to show men’s and boys’ health, improve gender relations, and promote gender equality.

History of International Men’s Day

The first International Men’s Day was celebrated in 1992 in Trinidad and Tobago.

 However, it was not until 1999 that the date of November 19th was chosen to mark the event each year. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the first president of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew. 

He was a strong advocate for gender equality and empowering men to take an active role in family life. The day has since spread globally to raise awareness of men’s well-being issues and promote positive male role models.

Why is International Men’s Day Important?

International Men’s Day brings attention to important issues facing men and boys today. It highlights positive male role models and celebrates men’s contributions across cultures. 

The day also draws attention to men’s health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and suicide. Suicide rates for men are typically higher than for women.

 The day encourages men to openly discuss their mental and physical health challenges. It promotes the message that “it’s okay not to be okay” and to seek help when needed. Overall, International Men’s Day strives to promote healthy relationships and a more caring society.
