As Imo State finds itself at a critical crossroads, contending with formidable challenges, notably a surge in insecurity that has resulted in over 1,700 casualties in the Southeast region between January 2021 and June 2023, the anticipation of an impending election adds another layer of significance.
Four prominent candidates have emerged in this major moment, each positing a distinct vision to tackle pressing issues and chart the course for Imo’s future.

Hope Uzodinma (APC)
Governor Hope Uzodinma is the current governor of Imo State. As the incumbent from the APC, he brings experience and stability to the table, navigating the state’s challenges.

- Incumbent Governor since 2020, having assumed office after a Supreme Court nullification.
- The current chairman of the Progressives Governors Forum.
- Enjoys the advantage of incumbency and backing from the ruling APC at the national level.

Athan Achonu (LP)
Athan Achonu, a resilient former senator, aims to make history as the first amputee governor. His unique perspective and commitment to the LP’s success in the South East bring a fresh and determined approach.

- Former senator with a brief stint in the National Assembly.
- He was known for embracing his disability, potentially becoming the nation’s first amputee governor.
- Banking on the LP’s success in the South East during the previous general elections.

Samuel Anyanwu (PDP)
Samuel Anyanwu, a devoted member of the PDP, brings a wealth of political experience as a former National Secretary and senator. His deep understanding of local politics makes him a strong contender to navigate Imo’s problems.
