Dichi Lar, a Nigerian lady who was jailed for three months in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, her broken silence about her prison ordeal.
The Nigerian was sent to three-month prison after taking to Twitter to post a protest video about her encounter with Dubai immigration officers.
UAE said filming someone without his or her content is against its law, the reason Lar was sentenced despite outrage by Nigerians on micro-blogging platform, Twitter.
Speaking to Punch in an interview, the lady said that the ordeal “comes with mental and emotional torture”, adding that no physical torture was meted to her by the prison official.
“It still feels like I am dreaming. I still wake up in the morning and still think I am in prison. I have to consciously remind myself that I am now out of prison. I am still trying to adjust to my normal life. So, things have not fully come back to (normal for) me, as it is now. For instance, I am still indoors. I haven’t really started going anywhere yet,” she said.
Lar, who was released on December 7, 2022, said she was deported back to Nigeria from the prison by the UAE authorities.
She, however, admitted that she is adjusting to normal life and doing medical checkups due to some “medical complications” she developed while in detention.
“I had a medical checkup done and I still have to go see the doctor with my results. I developed some medical complications while in detention. I started having lower back pain because there are no chairs in the prison and we had to sit on the floor. I think that has complicated the whole issue. I have done an X-ray and I will get to see what it looks like and what other tests look like,” Lar further stated.
