How FUTA Student Transfered Dept. Levy Via Digital Bank and Met His Death

Olona Joseph, a 300 level student of Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) has been confirmed dead on Saturday after weeks of struggling to pay up his department’s debt.

The student was reported to have committed suicide in his off-campus lodge.

Trouble visited Joseph when he was asked to transfer a departmental levy that was contributed to him. The actual amount of the levy had not been ascertained but it is believed to be huge.

Joseph was the financial secretary of his department, the president of that same department had requested that he transfer the money into his account, according to Adesola Ikulajolu, a Twitter user.

“He transferred the money to his president through Carbon (digital bank). He was debited but the president said he didn’t receive it. Complaints was lodged at the bank but no positive outcome. He was reported to the HOD. They were already labelling him ‘fraudster’,” Ikulajolu said.

The Head of the Department (HOD) was said to have reached out to Joseph’s father to report the incident, adding that the 300 Level student had defrauded the school.

Joseph had pleaded to pay instalmentally until the entire payment was complete even though he indicated that he had sent it but the president said he did not receive it.

“Joseph was being frustrated and threatened. While still trying to make up for the payment, he committed suicide. He used to run a clothing business in Akure,” he said.

IkejaBird gathered that Joseph’s body was reported to have been found in the morning after series of calls to him failed.
