Charity Upev and her son Tertsea from Makurdi in Benue State have been remanded in custodial centre following the order of Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
According to the Punch Newspaper, the 40-year-old woman and her son were accused of culpable homicide.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the Magistrate Roseline Iyorshe who oversaw the matter did not take their plea.
The magistrate adjourned the matter till February 8 and transferred the case file.
Jonah Uletu,the prosecution counsel, told the court that on January 24, the Makurdi Division Police had received information that Charity and her son beat up Fanen, her in-law living with her.
The prosecutor said that Charity claimed that her in-law had stolen meat from her soup jar.
The police reported that Fanen became unconscious following the beating. He was rushed to hospital but passed away while on treatment.
The prosecutor claimed that the offense violated Articles 97 and 222 of the Benue Criminal Code, 2004.
