Members of the House of Representatives are prepared to receive Prado SUVs worth N130 million. The legislators believe these high-end SUVs will assist them in carrying out their oversight duties effectively.
The parliament’s spokesperson, Rohousetimi Akin, made this announcement in a statement in Abuja on Sunday night. He explained that this initiative aligns with existing procurement laws and follows a customary practice from previous assemblies. He clarified that these vehicles are specifically for lawmakers’ use in their oversight roles within various standing committees and are not personal gifts.
Mr Akin stated that these vehicles will belong to the National Assembly for the entire 10th assembly, which covers the period from 2023 to 2027.

House of Rep claims the car is for work
However, if the government’s asset disposal policy is still in place when the assembly’s term ends in 2027, lawmakers may have the option to purchase the vehicles before they become their property.
He emphasized the importance of these vehicles in aiding lawmakers in their duties, particularly in overseeing various regions of the country to ensure the effective implementation of government interventions, programs, and policies.
Mr. Akin pointed out that the budget allocated to the legislature as a percentage of the national budget has steadily decreased over the past decade and currently stands at 0.5% of the federal budget. He urged stakeholders to focus on reducing costs in appropriate areas while supporting lawmakers in fulfilling their responsibilities effectively and with integrity.
He stressed that these vehicles are tools for work, not symbols of status, and are meant to enhance lawmakers’ representation, outreach to their constituencies, and oversight functions.
