Currently, the Nigerian economy is unfavourable to some businesses and individuals but despite it all, some Nigerians have found happiness in their daily activities.

IkejaBird navigated through the streets of Ikeja observing the daily hustle and bustle of individuals. We interacted with a few individuals who were more than willing to share their views, joys and struggles as they strive for their daily bread.

Liberty, who is in the business of selling ‘Ugwu’ vegetables said, “Business has been going well before now but these days I don’t understand what is going on in the economy. The price I got a bag of vegetables to sell in bits before was cheaper than how much I get it now. But, even though things are expensive I am still happy. The money I make from sales is less than what I used to make, but I use it to sustain my bills and expenses. “

A taxi driver who asked to remain anonymous said, “The economic situation has affected us as well because the removal of fuel subsidy which led to the increase in fuel makes us spend more on fuel and reduce our daily profit. But I still find happiness in the fact that I am my own boss, and I can control my work hours. I can focus more time on peak hours to earn more and rest during low periods. “

For Wunmi, a teacher, “The economy has affected a lot of areas for citizens but using myself I can say, a lot has changed. Items are more expensive in the market, transportation has gone up, rent has gone up and minimum wage still remains the same. No one is doing anything to come to our aid but as Nigerians we always try to survive. I have taken up more extra classes after school to increase my earnings because I love what I do and how I impact children’s lives. “

Some people have had to take up less desirable jobs like this female Keke driver we talked to. “I had to start driving keke not that this is what I want but you have to do something to survive. People look at me as if what I’m doing is wrong, but the truth is none of them will assist me if I ask for financial help. I am doing this to support my husband and children and he is still trying to accept it (laughs). I have found happiness doing it with time because the other Keke drivers have accepted me as one of them and treat me equally and I can also bring money to the house for the family too. “

One fact is that even though things are difficult, everyone is trying to survive. Remember the struggle you face today helps you develop the strength you need for tomorrow, so don’t give up because things will definitely get better.
