The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja has rejected a request made by the Department of State Services (DSS) to extend the detention of the suspended former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.
The DSS had sought a 14-day extended detention order, claiming to have discovered fresh evidence.
it was filed discreetly by the DSS’s legal team on Wednesday, and was brought before Justice Hamza Muazu, who was sitting as a vacation judge.

It lacks competent jurisdiction
However, the court dismissed the application, stating that it was an abuse of court process and lacked competent jurisdiction.
When questioned about the court’s jurisdiction, the DSS’s counsel, Mr. Victor Ejelonu, decided to withdraw the matter.
Mr. Emefiele’s re-arrest by the DSS occurred after he had been granted bail by the Federal High Court in Lagos, where he was facing charges related to illegal possession of firearms.
Emefiele no longer belong to the DSS
The court’s decision is seen as a victory for Mr. Emefiele, who has been in DSS custody for more than six weeks, and many have criticized the agency’s handling of the case, calling it persecution and personal vendetta.
With the court’s rejection of the application, the DSS now faces a difficult position, as they cannot legally continue to detain Mr. Emefiele any further.
This ruling marks another legal setback for the DSS in their ongoing case against the former CBN governor.
