A family from Gbako LGA of Niger State has been reported to have rejected old naira notes that were presented as bride price on Saturday.
According to Daily Trust, the family of the young woman rejected the old cash adding that it may no longer be a legal tender soon.
It was also reported that the incident took place on Sunday after the wedding had been completed.
The family of the bride had pointed out to the groom that they would not be able to change the old notes to new ones.
“We took money to the family of the girl we want to marry. They called me on Sunday to come and take the old currency notes back pending when we have the new naira notes. They said they don’t have anywhere to change the old notes. So, I want to take it to the bank pending when we get the new notes,” a member of the groom’s family is quoted to have said.
IkejaBird gathered that even though the deadline for the old naira note is near, many Nigerians have complained that they are yet to see the new naira note.
Currently, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has mandated Nigerians with the old naira notes to go to the nearest bank to make a swap before January 31.
