Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso has announced a two-month state of emergency after the tragic assassination of a presidential candidate. 

Despite this incident, he reassured the nation that the planned general elections for August 20 will proceed as scheduled.

President Lasso stated that the country’s Armed Forces are now actively ensuring the safety of citizens and the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections.

Villavicencio received threats

The deceased candidate, Villavicencio, a 59 year old man, was shot and killed while leaving a rally in the capital city, Quito.

Villavicencio, known for his anti-corruption efforts, was a prominent figure and a contender in the presidential race. 

He had expressed concerns about threats aimed at him and his team before the incident.

Others were attacked too 

The attack left nine others injured, including a candidate running for the national legislature and two policemen. 

Security forces responded by fatally shooting one of the alleged attackers, and six additional suspects were arrested.

President Lasso labeled the assassination a political crime with potential terrorist implications, suggesting an attempt to disrupt the upcoming elections. 

The National Electoral Council’s President, Diana Atamaint, confirmed that the election date remains unchanged.

President Lasso had previously declared a state of emergency in specific regions due to violent incidents, including a prison massacre and the murder of a mayor in July.

Tinubu Declares State Of Emergency On Food Security

Meanwhile, on Thursday, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency on food security in Nigeria. 

He approved that matters related to food and water availability and affordability be included in the National Security Council’s responsibilities. 

Dele Alake, the Special Adviser to the President on Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, revealed this information during a briefing with State House correspondents in Abuja at the Presidential Villa.
