Debunking Feminism Myths: The Truth About the Feminist Movement

By Bababunmi Agbebi

Given the continued debates and misconceptions about feminism and its societal impact, it is crucial to break down the essence of feminism and debunk some of the more common feminism myths to promote a shared understanding of gender equality in a diverse society.

Feminism is defined as the belief that women and men should be treated equally in society. However, misconceptions about feminism have led to the stigmatization of the movement and of people who identify as feminists. This contributes to misunderstanding, creates divisions (instead of unifying to achieve common goals), and makes individuals wary of calling themselves feminists.

Olamide Bashorun, a single lady and also a Corps member, insists that feminism is not anti-men. Rather, its main focus is to give women their deserving status and ensure women’s rights are upheld in society.

Chidera Obiora, a married civil servant in her 30s, says feminism isn’t about denigrating traditional roles. She believes that women should have the right to pursue any career or lifestyle without being limited by gender stereotypes or marriage.

Arinola Ojemuyiwa, who regards herself as a feminist, insists feminism isn’t confined to Western countries. It’s a global movement that takes various forms in different cultural contexts. She pointed to Nigerian women like Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, who played a key role in advancing gender equality in Nigeria.

One of the common feminism myths is the belief that how women dress says something about their competence. In reality, one’s appearance does not determine one’s skills or worth. The feminist movement continues to challenge such stereotypes to ensure women are judged based on their abilities rather than outdated societal biases.

Let’s remember that as we navigate progress in the tapestry of life, we are all threads, and together, we weave a masterpiece of equality and justice.
