The ACJHR has issued a statement asserting the innocence of Godwin Emefiele, who is facing fresh allegations brought by the Federal Government.

The Director of Public Prosecution and counsel to the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar, recently announced the filing of a 20-count charge against Emefiele before an FCT High Court in Abuja.

These charges are related to alleged corrupt advantages granted to Emefiele’s associates, including CBN employee Sa’adatu Yaro and her company, April1616 Investment Limited.

The total value was ₦6.9 billion

The charges involve the procurement of luxury vehicles and armoured buses with an estimated total value of around ₦6.9 billion.

The ACJHR, in a statement by its convener, Barrister Tochukwu Ohazuruike, has criticized the changing nature of the allegations against Emefiele and suggested that the Department of State Services (DSS) is engaged in a witch-hunting expedition sponsored by political and business interests seeking to tarnish Emefiele’s reputation.

The organisation laments what it calls unfair treatment of Emefiele and emphasizes his right to a fair trial.

They are not respecting the judiciary

The ACJHR points out that the DSS has displayed a lack of respect for the judiciary throughout the course of Emefiele’s case.

The organisation has called upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene and direct the secret police to release Emefiele while his case is pending a hearing and determination.

Barrister Ohazuruike stated, “Emefiele is innocent of the fresh allegations of breach of the Procurement Act and unfair advantages in the award of contracts by the Federal Government.
