The recent redeployment of a new Commissioner of Police to Lagos State is part of a broader strategic reorganisation within the Nigeria Police Force aimed at strengthening security operations and improving service delivery nationwide.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the posting of CP Olatunji Fatai as the new Commissioner of Police for Lagos State. This move followed the redeployment of the former commissioner, AIG Moshood Jimoh, to Zone 2 Command after his promotion.
According to the police authorities, the redeployment was not arbitrary but part of a deliberate effort to:
- Strengthen operational effectiveness across commands
- Enhance leadership capacity within the force
- Ensure strategic deployment of experienced officers
- Improve overall service delivery and public safety
Such periodic reshuffling is a common administrative practice in the police system, designed to inject fresh leadership, address emerging security challenges, and maintain efficiency in key states like Lagos, which remains Nigeria’s commercial hub.
Background of CP Olatunji Fatai
CP Olatunji Fatai is a seasoned police officer with deep roots in Lagos. He is an alumnus of Anwar-ul-Islam College, Agege, and holds multiple academic qualifications, including:
- Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University
- Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies
- Master’s degrees in Public Administration, Criminology, and Entrepreneurship
His strong academic background reflects a blend of practical policing knowledge and strategic security training.
Before his appointment as Lagos CP, Fatai had built a solid career within the Nigeria Police Force, holding several key positions:
- Officer-in-Charge, D4 Unit, State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Panti
- Area Commander, Area C, covering Surulere and surrounding areas
- Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Lagos State
- Commissioner of Police, Eastern Ports Command
These roles gave him extensive experience in investigations, operations, and urban policing—skills considered crucial for managing security in Lagos.
He was promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police in October 2025 and is widely described as a “quiet operator” with strong investigative ability and effective command presence.
The redeployment of CP Olatunji Fatai to Lagos reflects a calculated move by the police hierarchy to reinforce leadership and improve security outcomes. With his extensive background and experience, expectations are high that he will strengthen policing efforts and address the evolving security challenges in the state.
