The Federal Government on Monday received two million doses of the Johnson & Johnson (J&J) COVID-19 vaccine. This was donated by the European Union.

IkejaBird gathered that the vaccines were handed over at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), National Strategic Cold Store, Abuja.

The EU ambassador, Samuela Isopi, while presenting the vaccines, said the donation was part of the European Union’s commitment to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.

The executive director of NPHCDA, Faisal Shuaib, disclosed that the federal government had purchased over 39 million doses of the J&J vaccine, through the AFREXIM bank.

He said the J&J vaccines would be administered in riverine areas, desert areas and areas of poor security.

He said: “The availability of different vaccine brands does not in any way mean that some categories of people are selected for high-quality vaccines while others are targeted for low-quality vaccines.”

Shuaib said 15,792,392 (14.1 per cent) of Nigeria’s eligible population had been vaccinated with the first dose.
