An undergraduate of Rivers State University, Chika Eguma Ekwodu has been sentenced to two years imprisonment for impersonation and obtaining money by false pretenses.

Chika was apprehended and brought to trial by the EFCC on two count charges.Following the trial, on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, Justice P. I. Ajoku of the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt convicted him and handed down a two-year prison sentence.

One of the charges read: “That you, Chika Eguma Ekwodu, on the 5th day of June 2023, at Rivtaf Golf Estate Port Harcourt, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, did fraudulently represent yourself as one Scarlett, a bitcoin trade expert with intent to gain advantage for yourself, and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22(2)(b)(ii) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 22(2) (b) (iv) of the same Act.”

He was however given the option to serve one year in the Correctional Service for each count, with the alternative of paying a fine of Two Hundred Thousand Naira.

Recall that in July, one Peter Againpriye, an undergraduate in Rivers was sentenced to three years imprisonment over internet fraud.

It’s unfortunate to see young individuals getting caught up in such illegal activities, and it emphasizes the need for awareness and prevention of cybercrime.
