Godwin Emefiele has been suspended as the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
On Friday, June 9, the secretary’s office informed the federal government (SGF) of his suspension. As stated in the suspension notice, Emefiele was told to leave his office immediately.
In a statement released on Friday, June 9, Willie Bassey, director of communication for the SGF office, underlined that the suspension is effective immediately.
The statement reads:
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect. “This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the economy’s financial sector.
“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”
