A World Cup qualifier between football archrivals Brazil and Argentina descended into chaos last Tuesday as fans violence and clashes with police caused extensive delays. FIFA has now opened an investigation that could see Brazil punished.
The match at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã Stadium was halted for 30 minutes after brawling broke out in the stands. Supporters also scuffle with police officers, some of whom were seen beating fans with batons.
Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez was captured on video slapping a baton from a policeman’s hand before being restrained.

Parts of seats were ripped out and used as projectiles amid the melee. Some fans fled in tears while others left bloodied and injured before order was restored.
Governing body FIFA, which prohibits lack of safety at matches, has launched an inquiry. According to reports, possible sanctions range from fines and closed door games to point deductions that could hamper Brazil’s World Cup qualification hopes.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino condemned the violence, saying football must be secure for all. Argentina captain Lionel Messi also slammed the Brazilian police’s conduct. After discussions, the match proceeded with Argentina winning 1-0.
Analysts partly blamed inadequate security preparations by Brazilian authorities. It remains unclear what specifically triggered the clashes. Nonetheless, the disturbances and severity of the violence have marred the intense on-field rivalry between the South American powers off the pitch.
With Brazil’s qualification now uncertain and FIFA sanctions looming, the shocking scenes represent an embarrassment that could have lasting consequences.
