African Americans have worked hard to learn about their heritage by digging through old records. This has allowed them to trace their ancestry and even visit Africa.

The journey to discover their roots can be emotional and inspiring. While it takes a lot of work to research and learn about their ancestry, some of them have been able to discover their roots and visit Africa.

Here are a few that we have discovered: 

  1. Samuel L. Jackson: He is a well-known American actor, in 2019 discovered that his ancestors were from Gabon.
  2. Blair Underwood: The famous African American actor took a DNA test and found out that his ancestors were from the Babungo tribe in Cameroon
  3. Nicole Brewer: She is a teacher and a blogger. She took a DNA test and discovered that she has ancestors from Ghana. 
  4. Bishop T. D. Jakes: He took a DNA test and found out he has connections to Nigeria and the Igbo tribe.
  5. Sterling Brown: He took a DNA test that confirmed his African ancestry, but it didn’t reveal which specific region of Africa his ancestors were from.
  6. Oprah Winfrey: Her DNA showed that her ancestors were from the Kpelle tribe in Liberia, the Bamileke tribe in Cameroon, and a Bantu tribe in Zambia.
  7. Erykah Badu: She found out that her mother’s family originated from the Bamileke tribe in Cameroon’s grasslands. 
  8. Whoopi Goldberg: She took a DNA test and discovered that she belonged to two tribes (Papel and Bayote) from Guinea-Bissau.
  9. Rondel Holder: He found he was 29% Togo, 25% Ghana, and Ivory Coast through the DNA. 
  10. Chris Rock: Through a DNA test, he learned that he belonged to the Udeme people of North Cameroon.
  11. LeVar Burton: His DNA test connected him to the Hausa people in Nigeria. 
  12. Deborah Barfield Berry: Her Ancestry DNA test showed that she had origins in what is now Cameroon. 
  13. Brian Oliver: His DNA test matched him with five African countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Benin, Nigeria, Togo, and Ghana. 
  14. Isaiah Washington: Through a DNA test, he discovered his ancestry from Sierra Leone and the Mende people.
  15. Andrew Young: He discovered his ancestry from the Mende people of Sierra Leone.
  16. Morgan Freeman: His DNA test revealed that he is 80% African and 20% European, and his assumption of having Native American DNA was incorrect.
  17. Jay Speights:  His DNA showed he was related to Houanlokonon Deka, who came from a royal family in Benin long ago. They are distant cousins.
  18. Tina Turner: Her DNA test showed that she is mostly African (76%) and also has some European ancestry (33%) and a very small amount of Native American ancestry (1%).
  19. Don Cheadle: His DNA test showed that he originates from Cameroon.
  20. Snoop Dogg: A DNA test was done on him, which showed that most of his ancestry (71%) comes from Sub-Saharan Africa, followed by Native American ancestry (23%), and lastly, European ancestry (6%).
  21. Gabriel Union: Gabrielle revealed that after checking her ancestry, she discovered she has West African, Filipino, and Native American ancestry.

In conclusion, African Americans are becoming muvh more interested in tracing their African ancestry.
