Presidency has issued a stern warning to Governor Nasir E-Rufai of Kaduna and Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano state over their recent reaction to President Muhammadu Buhari’s national broadcast.
In a statement issued by the media and publicity aide to the president, Garba Shehu, on Friday, February 17, presidency said Buhari is committed to upholding the principles of democracy against allegation that he is planning an interim government.
Shehu also said the presidency “will not be swayed by the negative energy that is being expended against a well-meaning currency change.”
Ikeja Birds recalls that Ganduje and El-Rufai ordered residents of their respective states to continue spending the 1000 and 500 notes as legal tender.
The directive countered the position of the president contained in his national broadcast on Tursday, February 16, placing ban on the 500 and 1000 notes.
Shehu said there is absolutely “no truth to the claim that President Muhammadu Buhari is working towards an interim government or even worse, the truncation of democracy.”
“The talk of interim government and truncation of democracy is way off the mark. Those who peddle it stand to gain nothing- nothing at all -but the creation of panic and the incitement of the public against the federal government….
“Everybody is aware that there is a lot of pressure on everyone-all of us- the party, its elected officials, its candidates and law enforcement agencies following the way the currency swap has gone but the way to go is not to panic. There is indeed a problem and nobody will pretend that it doesn’t exist,” part of the statement read.
