Fear gripped residents of no fewer than five communities under Kurya Madaro district in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State, as they fled their homes after bandits allegedly resorted to raping housewives and their daughters for not paying levies imposed on the communities.
Checks revealed that residents of the affected communities abandoned their homes to escape further attacks after failing to pay the N2 million imposed on them.
A resident simply identified as Abubakar, alleged that the bandits requested N2 million for them to live in peace.
According to him, members of his community were only able to generate N1.5 million which was insufficient for the bandits.
He said: “The bandits rape our wives, our daughters and our sisters anytime they invade the village during the day or in the night. They kill anybody that challenges them. They loot our stores for food and sometimes set our houses ablaze.”
Abubakar lamented poor security in the communities which enabled bandits to operate unchallenged.
Commissioner of Police in the State, Ayuba Elkana, noted that the police and other security agencies would restore peace to the state.
“Our aspiration of returning Zamfara to its former status, the most peaceful state in the country, can be achieved with synergy among all stakeholders,” he said.
