The military officers in Gabon took over power in the country shortly after President Alli Bongo was re-elected for a third term in office.

Gabon who has been in power for 14 years was re-elected for the third time on Saturday with 64.27 percent of votes cast.

Following this, Gabonese military officers annulled the results of the election as they shared that they were dissolving “all the institutions of the republic,” BBC reported.

The opposition has denounced what they did as “fraudulent,” but in a TV channel, Gabon 24, one of the soldiers stated that their actions stem from an attempt to obtain peace in the country.

Introducing themselves as members of the Committee of Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), the soldier stated that “irresponsible, unpredictable governance resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos.”

The soldiers also announed the closure of the Gabon’s border. It was worthy to note that Bongo overthrow would be the end of his family’s 53 years in power in Gabon and Bongo was almost overthrown sometime in 2018 when he suffered a stroke.

In 2019, an attempt to overthrow him was made, however, the soldiers who failed were all thrown into prison.

Meanwhile, in recent days, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has come under scrutiny for his stance on the ongoing crisis in neighboring Niger.

Tinubu’s threat to use military force to reverse the coup has sparked both local and regional debates, with concerns raised about the potential consequences of such an action.

Amidst this backdrop, there’s growing emphasis on the constitutional framework that governs such decisions.
