Former Central Bank governor and candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has been declared winner of Anambra State Governorship poll that began on Saturday.
The Anambra State governorship election was concluded on Wednesday morning after INEC had declared the election inconclusive on Sunday following no votes in Ihiala Council leading to a supplementary election.
The 61-year-old Soludo won with 112,229 votes crushing Valentine Ozigbo of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP), who polled 53,807 votes, and Andy Uba of the All Progressives Congress ( APC) who got 43,285 votes.
Ifeanyi Ubah of the Young Progressive Party polled 21,261 votes.Presenting the final poll result at the State Collation Centre, Awka, INEC Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof Florence Obi, declared Soludo winner of the election after winning Ihiala to take his tally to 19 councils out of 21.
Soludo’s long walk began in September 2009 when he announced his Governorship aspiration and emerged as PDP consensus Governorship candidate in October 2009.
In February 9, 2010, during the state’s election, he lost to Peter Obi of APGA. While in July 2013, he resigned from PDP and joined APGA but was disqualified by APGA screening committee in August 2013.
Afterwards, in September 2019, he was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari into Economic and Advisory Council ( EAC).
In February 2021, he declared his intention to run under APGA but this came with a tussle as he escaped an assassination where three of his security aides were killed in March.
